November

In the latest Brussels update, the KVNR looks back at developments in Brussels over the past month. November closed with the official approval of the new European Commission led by President Von der Leyen by the European Parliament. Over the next five years, the formal term of office, the Commission puts Europe's competitiveness at the heart of its work. Driving innovation and maintaining the sustainable agenda are key pillars.

We highlight two hearings relevant to shipping: the hearing of then-Designate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra (Climate Action and Clean Growth) and that of then-Designate Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas (Transport and Tourism).

In his hearing, Wopke Hoekstra stressed the importance of accelerating the energy transition, underlining the need for funding and clear regulation. EEurope remains focused on the set, ambitious climate goals and is further committed to international cooperation for having and keeping a level playing field.

Apostolos Tzitzikostas' answers to questions from the European Parliament highlighted the importance of international agreements such as through the International Maritime Organisation for a sector like shipping. Also highlighted was the Sustainable Transport Investment Plan. This plan should accelerate innovative solutions, such as alternative fuels and new technologies, crucial for making the transport sector sustainable.

Marjolein also discussed innovation, its financing and the importance of maritime cooperation with Jaap Gebraad, secretary-general of Waterborne Technology Platform.
