The Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners (KVNR) has taken note of the announcement of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, which is expected to be signed on June 19. It has also been announced that the Strait of Hormuz will be permanently reopened for commercial shipping. This is an important and positive signal for international shipping. Free passage through this strategic strait is of great importance for trade flows and offers prospects for ships and seafarers who have been in the Persian Gulf in recent weeks.

However, some caution is still warranted at this stage. Previous experiences have shown that announcements about reopening are not always immediately followed by clear and verifiable implementation in practice.

“For shipowners, it is not only the announcement of reopening that matters, but especially how safe, predictable, and controlled the passage is organized in practice”
Annet Koster, director of the KVNR

It is therefore essential that the passage is carefully and effectively regulated logistically. Clarity on the current security situation, including the presence or removal of potential sea mines, is necessary to restore confidence in a safe passage. The KVNR continues to closely monitor developments.
