Insights into the maritime industry

After mediation by Oman, the Houthis finally released the 25-member crew of the ship Galaxy Leader after 430 days, international media reported.

Two years ago, the House of Representatives passed a motion by Chris Stoffer (SGP) calling on the government to bring offshore fully under the tonnage tax regime and the remittance reduction for maritime shipping. This is a long-held wish of Dutch shipowners, who face a fiscal disadvantage in the Netherlands compared to foreign competitors.

Since 1 January 2025, FuelEU Maritime has come into force. FuelEU Maritime is part of the ‘Fit for 55’ legislative package to reduce the EU's greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and be climate neutral by 2050, and is thus a complementary measure to EU ETS.

Last week, the Maritime Monitor 2024 was launched. The Maritime Monitor is published annually on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW ). As the umbrella organisation for the maritime cluster, the Netherlands Maritime Land (NML ) has a coordinating role. The report paints a picture of the various trends at play within the maritime sector, through hard figures. It is important to communicate that the monitor in general terms concerns the figures of 2023.

Visiting a ship for a study course, how nice is that! On Tuesday 10 December, IT students from the minor Hack@Sea, which is taught by NHL Stenden's Maritime IT Security department, visited shipping company Wagenborg's Kasteelborg.
